Places to Visit in Andaman & Nicobar Island
Cellular Jail
Colonial prison which is used by the British to put Indian freedom fighters in solitary confinement, now a museum with a light and sound show.
Ross Island
Former British settlement, now a scenic, deserted island with ruins of a bazaar, residences, ballrooms etc.
Port Blair is the gateway to some of the most stunning island in the Andaman sea. Such as Havelock, Neill and Baratang, which feature sprawling resorts and scuba diving schools.
Rutland Island
Stunningly beautiful, remote and undisturbed, Rutland has only been accessible to travellers within the last decade or so. Diving and swimming around the island is greatly enjoyable. The long white - sand beaches lined with mangrove forests are undisturbed and perfect if you enjoy lying on a beach with the sun beaming down onto you. It is a great place to connect with nature and relax. The shallow waters of Rutland Island have a good representation of smaller fish and coral and are a good place for training for open water divers. It is an ideal place for training new divers. The island boasts of awesome rock faces and spectacular dive landscapes. The marine life includes trigger fish, grunts, goatfish and sting rays. The smaller fish that inhabits the Island live in these waters along with some beautiful corals. You can reach the island by hiring local boats from Port Blair.
Cinque Island
Cinque Island located 26 Km from Port Blair is a sanctuary with rare corals and under water marine life. The island has beautiful sandy beaches and tropical rain forest. A sand bar connects the North and South Cinque islands.
Barren Island
It is the only active volcano in India. The volcano erupted in 1991, again in 1994-95 and as recently as February 2017, after remaining dormant for about 177 years. This island is about three kilometers in diameter and has a big crater of the volcano, about half a kilometer away from the shore. The island can be visited by chartering boats and with the permission of Forest Department, but advance booking is essential as very limited vessels travel to this island.
Great Nicobar
This place, with an area of 400 sq miles, is located at 537 km distance by sea from Port Blair and open only to Indian tourists. The southernmost tip of India, ' Indira Point ' is in Great Nicobar Island.
Little Andaman Island
Little Andaman Island is evolving as a popular surfing destination in India. Located south of the South Andaman Island, Little Andaman Island is at a distance of 120-km by sea from Port Blair. Hutbay in Little Andaman is the entry and exit point and also the island headquarter.
Northern side of Butler Bay Beach is emerging as India's prime surfing destination as it offers the best exposure. Resorts rent out surfboards and arrange for surf camps near Butler Bay beach.
But there is more to this island beyond surfing.
